I teach history at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York. I hold a bachelor’s degree in English from Tufts University and masters and doctoral degrees in American Civilization from Brown. I’m the author of fifteen books on a variety of subjects, published by trade, university, and textbook publishers (see my books page on this site). In recent years, my
writing has taken an increasingly fictive turn, reflected in this blog, among other work.
I live in Hastings on Hudson with my wife, historian Lyde Cullen Sizer of Sarah Lawrence College. We have four children.
